Julia had progressed from C-grade into B-grade criterium racing, but her performance had stalled. She was struggling to hold the bunch, particularly when the pace surged on short climbs.
We introduced annual periodisation, progressive overload and targeted power development to improve her sprint, 30-second power and FTP. The focus was to help her manage repeated surges, accelerate out of corners and stay in contention through to the finish.
We also introduced structured strength training, developing her technique, loading capacity and core strength, alongside an individualised nutrition plan to support fuelling and recovery.
After 10 weeks, Julia improved across every measured power duration. Her 30-second power increased by 16.4%, while her weight remained stable as she gained muscle and lost body fat — building a stronger foundation for continued performance development.
I was fit enough to finish every race and never once in a position to affect one. Anna was blunt about why: I had trained one gear for six years. The repeatability work was genuinely unpleasant for the first two months and then something clicked. Being able to go with an attack and still be there two minutes later has changed how I ride entirely. I am not winning yet, but I am in the race rather than watching it from forty riders back.
